I know, you don't believe it, but I am a Mormon...

This video explains very succinctly one of the big reasons that I'm a fan and an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints/LDS/Mormon church. I love my family, all the different crazy branches of it--Mormon, Jewish, Sikh, Mexican-American, Romanian, Punjabi Indian, European mutt. I'm constantly amazed by the similarities that pop up across the ethnic and generational divides.

I am grateful for those that have gathered and retold and recorded stories of my ancestors

-GSG (Bapu) for tape recording his parent's telling their crazy life stories (Beji was a hoot and a half, and a strong independent woman & loving mother) and for taking me on a military-march style tour of Punjab, where he was raised Sikh before moving to America to attend college and join the crazy Mormons, who's doctrine made more sense to him. Thankfully, for the benefit of all his brothers and consequently nieces and nephews, he did not abandon his family when he switched religions, and he is somewhat responsible for a vast number of organic rouge grapes being produced in Cali & for bringing Kansas the plant genetics genius BG.

-GoGo for asking her mother-in-law all sorts of questions about her family: how she grew up in Canada as the child of Romanian immigrants and how she managed a mental illness with motherhood with the support of an excellent husband and father Julius. (who was also a haberdasher, just wanted to throw out that word. No mad hatter, as far as I know.) GoGo has shared these collected stories with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and also with me. (I need to record more of her memories before it's too late and will be eternally grateful that she took such an interest in her husband's family history.);

-I miss Mom/Grandma Betty frequently and am so glad that I got to know her personally and hear her stories, even if I often refused to learn the lessons that she was trying to pass on. (It is with very typical family stubbornness that as she would attempt to tame my tangled locks and my eyes would sting with tears, I would listen to her recount how she had been too proud to speak up when it hurt when a family friend had combed her hair at my age, and although she was counseling me to do the exact opposite, I refrained from telling her how painful her combing was because I was strong and thought I had to prove it.)

-The actualy Aunt Flo, for helping her children put together a book recounting stories like that of fireman/dairyman/cotton farmer Daddy Joe, my great-grandpa and the youngest son of polygamist Helaman Pratt, who raised his families in Mexico once polygamy was outlawed in the US/Utah. Daddy Joe's mother, Bertha, was having no luck finding a husband in Utah, and so moved to Mexico after visiting her sister and becoming the 4th wife to her sister's husband. After Helaman's death, the two sisters set up household together, with Bertha teaching school to support them financially and her sister raising the children and managing the household full time. I'm related to Mitt Romney through this line, somehow.

Hopefully my facts aren't too mangled. These are the stories that are in my brain and heart and inform my identity as a proud Caucajewmexdian. As I type these, I see that all 4 branches held women, strong and faithful matriarchs, of great power and influence for good in the world and their families. I am honored to live in their legacy and hope that I add my own stories worth passing down!

Homemade Socks

I am a member of Goodreads, but I have not updated my book selection in 2 1/2 years. I've been debating if I should start again. I logged on and found this message between my sister and I from 5 years ago. She's still obsessed with both socks and The Count of Monte Christo. I have yet to knit a work of literature into a wearable piece, however. Right now I'm knitting an octopus.

Hey Olivia,
The Count of Monte Christo Penguin classic 1,000 some pages edition I have on my book list would be a schweet Christmas present. The copy I have from the library right now is missing the first 36 pages and some other random pages in the middle so it is kind of hard to understand the whole story.

I'll keep that in mind. Although I thought the socks would be my Christmas present to you...

Oh yeah. I'll have to pester someone else then. or you could knit the entire story into a REALLY long sock. It would be like a tapestry that I could wear! That would be the best Christmas present ever.

Auntie Olivia

This week I am visiting my brother and his family, to meet the newest family member. Here he is with his big sister. Aren't they adorable?

Here is someone else adorable...

International Baking Party

A few days ago, my sister and I had a baking party via skype. It was Friday night for me, and I made peanut butter cookies in my kitchen in nyc. It was Saturday afternoon for her, and she made cheesy biscuits in her kitchen in Thailand. They were both delicious, although my cookies were a little dry. I added some milk and some applesauce, which made them less dry but more biscuit like.

We both got a kick out of this illustration from my vintage Joy of Cooking that my brother got me one Christmas:

I don't think that it really describes how to press cookies with a fork.

Hooray for skype!

My one and only

So, my sister did not like my joke. The one about her being my favorite sister, seeing as how she is my only sister. (Although I do have a new sister-in-law, which is exciting!) My brothers actually started this joke. They used to tell me all the time how I was their favorite sister. Then, when my sister was born, they would say that I was there favorite older sister. (My sister & I are bookends, I'm the oldest and she's the youngest.)

I could have said that she would write something involving muskrats. Or that she is the fierce one (I mean that in a good way. While I often feel shy and reserved, she is braver. She used to take people's faces in both of her hands and squeeze to show how much she loved them.) I could also argue with her that although she is my only biological sister, I do have other sisters in spirit, but she is my favorite overall.

My sister has told me that in her mind, I'm perfect. I could say the same of her. I love everything about her. (Even though I tell her that she's weird sometimes.) She's artistic, energetic, passionate, and empathetic. She's wise beyond her years. Maybe in part because she's grown up as the youngest and been expected to keep up with all of us.

But what it comes down to, really, is that no matter what, she is my sister, and I will always love and adore her.

Tag, you're it!

Some of you have probably seen this one going around:

Once you've been tagged, you have to write a note with 16 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 16 people to be tagged, listing their names and why you chose them.

The person who tagged me gave the reason that it will give me material for my blog, so here goes:

1. I like to ride my bike. In the winter, especially, for some reason.
2. I actually got up and rode my bike today before going to work.
3. I continue to believe that I can someday get up and do things in the morning regularly and cheerfully, or at least without really, really wanting to go back to
bed, despite all the evidence to the contrary.
4. I felt like a morning person over Thanksgiving, since I was getting up at 8am (which was 10 am according to my body clock) and most of the rest of the household was not up until 10 or 11am.
5. I'm not really a night owl either. I just like to sleep, mostly. Except when I have insomnia.
6. Today I saw The Tallest Man on Earth sing. He walked like a bird around the stage and didn't sound at all Swedish.
7. habit: sneakily poking, or "zotting" my siblings and those who remind me of them. (Sorry, M.D. & H.G.)
8. I've developed a love for dark chocolate, since living with my sister again after college.
9. I can't make my chocolate last nearly as long as my sister can hers.
10. I can keep my room tidier than my sister's, although I don't always.
11. Whoever designed the north exit to the bike path is sadistic. Yes, it's a great idea to end with a sharp curve around which there is a staircase! And just in case that didn't kill the cyclist, let's send them into oncoming traffic that's entering the freeway!
12. Goal: take calculus someday.
13. Goal: learn another language somewhat fluently. At least passably.
14. My French's not up to snuff.
15. Habit: staying up later than I mean to. (speaking of which, it's 1 am now...)
16. "I want to change the world, instead I sleep" borrowed from Ingrid Michaelson.

Adventures in Food

There's a farmer's market a few blocks from where I live, every Saturday. I'm enjoying the fresh produce and experimenting with new recipes.

The other night, I was talking to my sister on Skype. I told her that I needed to go so that I could make dinner. She suggested that I just take my laptop into the kitchen and keep talking while I cooked. So I did, and I had my own cooking show! (Slow moving though it was.) I made a beautiful, red stir fry with fresh beets!

Here is some more colorful produce:
